The Water Not Coal campaign is a citizen initiative petition under Alberta's Citizen Initiative Act seeking to ban new coal mining and coal exploration in Alberta's Rocky Mountains, foothills, and watershed areas. The campaign collects physical (in-person) signatures from eligible Alberta voters. What we collect
When you register to find a signing location or to hear about results:

When you register as a signature collector, Elections Alberta requires specific personal information (full legal name, address, phone, email) as part of the Citizen Initiative Act. This is a legislative requirement, not a campaign choice. Elections Alberta may contact you directly to verify your registration and/or signature.
When you donate, we collect your name and contact information (required by Elections Alberta for contribution reporting), donation amount, and payment information. We do not store your credit card or payment details — payment processing is handled entirely by Square, Inc.
Automatically collected information
Aggregated analytics through Cloudflare Web Analytics: page views, referral sources, device type, browser, operating system, and country. This data is aggregated, does not identify you personally, and does not use cookies. Server logs (IP address, pages visited, timestamps) are retained temporarily for security and performance. We do not use Google Analytics, tracking cookies, or third-party advertising pixels.
How we use your information

We will not send unrelated marketing, share your data with political parties or unrelated campaigns, or sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party.

We may also disclose personal information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority.
Your consent and rights
By providing your information you consent to its collection, use, and disclosure as described here. You can withdraw consent at any time by clicking unsubscribe in any email, emailing info@coalpetition.ca with the subject "Unsubscribe" or "Delete My Data", or calling/texting 587-325-5421. Under PIPEDA and PIPA you have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information and to withdraw consent. We will respond within 30 days.
Data retention
- Registration data: duration of the campaign plus one year, unless you request earlier deletion
- Signature collector and donation records: as required by Elections Alberta
- Email subscriptions: until you unsubscribe
Security
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Databases use encrypted connections. Payment processing is handled by PCI DSS-compliant Square. Access to personal data is restricted to authorized campaign personnel. No method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure.
Terms & Conditions
By using our websites, you agree to these terms. When you register, you agree to provide accurate and complete information, keep your contact information current, and use the site for its intended purpose of supporting the petition.
The citizen initiative petition requires physical, in-person signatures on official petition forms. Registering on our website does not constitute signing the petition.
Prohibited conduct
You agree not to submit false information; harass, threaten, or intimidate others; attempt to access other users' accounts; interfere with the website's operation or security; or use automated systems (bots, scrapers) without our permission.
Intellectual property
All content on our websites is owned by or licensed to the Water Not Coal campaign. You may share and reproduce our content for non-commercial purposes related to supporting the petition, provided you attribute it to the Water Not Coal campaign.
Disclaimer & governing law
Our websites are provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Water Not Coal campaign shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of our websites. These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
Donation, Refund & Delivery Policy
Donations are regulated by Elections Alberta under the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act and are not tax-deductible. By donating you confirm your contribution complies with applicable limits (currently $4,600 per person, business, union, or organization), that you are eligible to contribute under Alberta election law, and that your information is accurate. Donations are processed securely by Square, Inc.; we do not store payment details.
Donations are generally non-refundable, except for processing errors or unauthorized transactions. To request a refund, contact info@coalpetition.ca or call 587-325-5421 within 30 days. No physical goods are provided in exchange for a donation; you will receive an email confirmation and receipt.
Children's Privacy
Our websites are not directed at children under 18 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to These Policies
We may update these policies from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
